Angler Accounts of MWBA Tournaments
Bass Bites
MWBA anglers who win checks in our Tournaments are expected to submit an account of their day, for inclusion in that Tournament’s Bass Bites, a simple summary of winning ways. The best accounts answer who fished, what they caught, where they fished, when they caught their fish and why they fished. Details are important, because they become instruction manuals for future tournaments on that water. This is another way that MWBA members help other anglers improve their skills.
Some anglers are reluctant to share details about their success. But the truth is that no matter how someone succeeded, anyone who strictly follows their lead will find that they must adapt their fishing to the conditions prevalent on that day. No two days of fishing are ever identical. Detailed information is helpful, but only in the hands of an angler who makes good decisions about applying it. The difference between winning and “losing” in bass fishing is almost always about who made better decisions, not who had the best script to follow.
Bass Bites is not limited to accounts from money winners. Other anglers also have good information to share, e.g. what worked and what didn’t work for them.
Bass Bites accounts are due to the Secretary no later than the Wednesday following the Tournament. There’s no need to submit a polished, publishable account. Just get the information down. All the information. The Secretary relishes opportunities to wield a red keyboard according to Strunk and White (1959 et seq.) and a plethora of Style Manuals, hopefully without changing what the writer intended to convey.
After being emailed to the Membership, each Bass Bites is pooled with the other documents for that Tournament (i.e. Facts Sheet, Pairings List and Results & Payouts) and posted to the website in a Google Drive Folder that the public can read. The Link to that page is in the Heading above.
February 2024 Bartlett
Winning Team: Charlie Mackintosh and Bill Pfeifer won with a total catch of five fish weighing 13.35 lbs, including the tournament's big fish at 3.67 lbs.
Pre-Fishing and Strategy: Both Mackintosh and Pfeifer pre-fished separately and found success with bass in shallow water up the river, using jigs and drop-shot rigs.
Tournament Day Tactics: They adapted their location due to the presence of another boat, with Pfeifer catching a two-pound bass on a Margareta Mutilator drop-shot, while Mackintosh used a green pumpkin 4” Yamamoto hula grub on a ¼ ounce jig. They moved between 2-3 spots, timing catches with the fish’s feeding.
Catching and Culling: Despite early losses, they caught 9 keeper bass, culling smaller ones. Mackintosh's 3.65 lb. bass was crucial for their win.
January 2024 Martinez
The Midweek Bass Anglers completed their first tournament of the year, which was held in the swiftly moving waters of the lower Colorado River at Lake Martinez. The field was comprised of 25 boats, with the largest sack of fish being caught by Laron Porter and Joseph Edgett coming on at 25.26 pounds with a 6.06 lb. kicker!
Also, a shout out to Jeff Stone and Ernie Melcher with their 7.68 pound toad to lead the year with big fish honors. Congratulations boys!
I also wish to thank those who decided to bring their boat in order to get everyone on the water. Next month we return to Bartlett Lake, which most are very familiar with. Register for the tournament online and register early. See you soon.
This month was the annual awards banquet. We had a great turn-out and a great new venue. The award winners are listed below. And, to top that off, the raffle prizes were outstanding. We look forward to the next banquet.
I want to encourage the teams to have their photos taken after weigh-in. It only takes a minute. This month we had Jim Duel taking the photos. He actually ended up taking short videos instead of still photos
