FAQs
-
Can my friend and I fish as a Team if we both join the Club?
Only if the computer assigns you to the same Team. We mix Teams (Pairs) up for every tournament through a Draw that is computerized and random. To have a chance of being paired with each other through the Draw, one of you would have to fish as a Boater and the other as a Co-Angler. And at most you’d be paired once each year. Most of us have fished clubs and tournament trails that have permanent teams. We prefer the MWBA approach. It fosters friendly competition. The upside? You’ll fish with as many as 11 different anglers through the year, and have a chance to make 11 new friends and learn more fishing techniques.

I can't attend monthly meetings; can I still participate in Tournaments?
Yes, but you’d miss much of the fun of being in the Club, and you wouldn’t help carry the load of managing it. Clubs are most successful when they have a fully engaged membership. Whether or not a member attends the meetings, we all have the same responsibility of filing Tournament entries on time and complying with the Club’s By-Laws and Tournament Rules. Our Board works hard to keep all members informed by email, but when the time comes to discuss things like changes in By-Laws or Tournament Rules, or elect Board members, face-to-face discussion is essential. Plus, it’s much harder to get to know members when they only come to Tournaments.
-
What does it cost to join the Club and fish Tournaments?
Membership has an annual fee of $40 ($43 if paid online). Tournaments have a $60 entry fee ($63 if paid online). Co-Anglers pay their Boater an additional, lake-specific, mandatory Fair Share Fee to help cover the boat’s operating expenses. The Fair Share Fee varies according to how far the lake is from Phoenix. You will find details about each of these topics elsewhere on the website.
-
What is the minimum age requirement for joining?
Members must be 18 years old or older.
-
How can I get more information about joining?
Complete our contact form, which is linked to our Home Page. We’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
-
I don't own a boat; can I still participate in Tournaments?
Absolutely! Many of our members don’t own boats. A Tournament Team consists of a Boater and a Co-Angler who fish from one boat. Teams are formed by a random, computerized Draw, so they change each month.
-
How are the Tournament Teams paired?
For each Tournament, Teams (a Boater and a Co-Angler) are randomly paired through a computerized draw.
-
Is certain equipment required for Tournaments?
Boats have State- or Federally-required safety equipment, and livewells. When we fish the Colorado River, we must meet California’s boat and fishing requirements, as well as Arizona’s. Anglers are required to wear PFDs while on the water with the Big Motor running. But for tackle, including rods and reels? The only requirement is that it all must fit well enough on a boat not to be a hazard. And not weigh enough to sink the boat. Our Tournament Rules and Tournament Facts Sheets spell out some of these requirements. You can find those elsewhere on this website. We also have recommendations for Boater and Angler Etiquette that touch on how to operate and share a boat.
-
Is a specific skill level required to join the Club and participate in Tournaments?
No. We welcome anglers of all skill levels, from raw beginners to well-seasoned (crusty old) veterans. MWBA fosters an environment in which members can learn from each other and improve their skills, making it a great place for anglers of all skill levels and backgrounds.
-
What happens in case of adverse weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances on the day of a Tournament?
We prioritize the safety of members. If adverse weather conditions or other circumstances develop overnight that might affect a tournament, the Tournament Director will announce in the Pre-Launch Meeting whether postponement or cancellation is necessary. If unsafe conditions develop while we’re on the water, Teams must bear the responsibility for erring on the side of caution. Sometimes it’s safer to lay up in a cove or behind a ridge, and sometimes it’s better to run for the ramp and trailer. Most of the lakes we fish have good cellular service, so it’s usually easy for members to contact the Tournament Director (and vice versa) if needed. That’s why we keep our Membership Roster updated with two phone numbers for each member: their mobile phone and a phone number for an emergency contact.
-
Do I need a fishing license to participate in the Club's Tournaments? If so, how do I obtain one?
Yes, a valid Arizona fishing license (resident or non-resident) is required for you to participate in our Tournaments. You can buy one on the Arizona Game and Fish Department's website or at various local retailers.
-
What types of bass are typically targeted in the Tournaments, and are there size or bag limits?
Our Tournaments focus on largemouth and smallmouth bass. Size and bag limits may vary by lake. Participants are informed of the rules for each Tournament during our monthly meetings, through Club communications and in Pre-Launch Meetings at Tournaments. We require 100% compliance with fishing and boating regulations, including restrictions required by the Club’s Tournament Permits from certain federal or tribal agencies.
-
How can I be involved beyond participating in Tournaments?
We encourage members to participate in all Club activities and initiatives. We sometimes organize conservation and community outreach events, such as habitat improvement projects, fishing clinics and youth programs. Members also contribute by serving as Club Officers and on committees, helping organize events and sharing expertise with fellow anglers. Several members volunteer as Boat Captains or for shore duty in annual C.A.S.T. for Kids events at Lake Pleasant. CFKLP events give kids (6 and older) with special needs and their adult companion a morning on the lake, boating and fishing. Contact our Club Secretary for more information about CFKLP.
